Family portrait sessions are a lot more just some photos... they are memories, your legacy, your children's heritage and the story of your family's journey. It is more important then you may realize to capture these memories of your littles; be it a celebration or milestone or just the fact that your children are growing up faster then you might care to admit.
Whether you’re planning your first-ever family photoshoot or looking to refresh your walls with updated portraits, a little preparation can make all the difference in creating images you’ll treasure forever. Here’s how to plan the perfect family portrait session and make it a memorable experience.
I've been a professional Niagara region family photographer for 18 years, and here's what I can share with you.

Choose the Right Photographer
Finding the right photographer is the foundation of a great session. Look for someone whose style resonates with you; whether it’s candid and lifestyle, classic and posed, or artistic and creative. Don’t hesitate to browse their portfolio, read reviews, and schedule a consultation to discuss your vision. A good photographer will help you feel comfortable and guide you throughout the process. And that includes helping you find a location if you don't already have a location in mind.
Select the Perfect Location: As a Niagara Region Family Photographer, I know lots
Which brings me to my next point. The location sets the tone for your family portraits, so choose a setting that suits your family’s personality and style. Here are a few ideas:
Outdoor Spaces: Parks, beaches, or fields offer natural light and scenic backdrops.
Your Home: Lifestyle sessions at home create a cozy and intimate feel.
Urban Settings: Cityscapes or unique architectural spots add a modern and edgy vibe. Work with your photographer to determine the best spot based on your preferences and lighting conditions.
And just think about what kind of vibe you are going for when selecting a location. Think about accessibility. Do you need a stroller? Do you have seniors with you? Do you need level paths and walk ways? Or are and your family about to do some walking.
Time is also important for locations. You do not want to be on the beach at noon for a photo shoot when the sun is high and causing harsh shadows and blow outs on everyone's faces.
Plan Your Outfits
Coordinating your outfits can elevate your portraits and create a polished look. Stick to a cohesive color palette and avoid overly busy patterns or logos. Soft, neutral tones work beautifully for timeless photos, while pops of color can add vibrancy. Ensure everyone’s clothing is comfortable and weather-appropriate for the location and season. Gone are the days were everyone is wearing similar if not the same outfits (think white tees and blue jeans). And dressing in layers is a fun and easy way to variety to your set of images. And don't just think about colours, think about textures as well. Mix in knits with loose cottons.

Prepare the Kids (and Pets!)
If you have little ones or pets, preparing them ahead of time can help things run smoothly:
Talk to Them: Explain what the session is about and how fun it will be.
Bring Snacks and Toys: Keep kids and pets happy with small treats or favorite toys.
Incorporate Play: Let the session include moments of play and interaction to capture authentic smiles and laughter.
Sometimes it can even be helpful to have a friend tag along to help with a dog for images where the dog is not included. Also talk to your photographer before hand if it is okay to bring dogs. Some people are scared of dogs (not me I love them!) and some locations do not allow pets. This is something that should also be taken into consideration when selecting a location.

Time It Right
Schedule your session during the best time of day for lighting. Golden hour; the hour after sunrise or before sunset, is ideal for outdoor photos, as it provides soft, flattering light. For families with young children, consider their nap and meal schedules to ensure they’re well-rested and happy.
Embrace Authenticity
While posed shots are lovely, some of the most magical family portraits happen in candid moments. Encourage your family to interact naturally, whether it’s laughing, playing, or sharing a tender hug. These genuine connections will shine through in the photos and make them truly special. Because lets get real for a second, your kids do not want to sit and smile. The best photos are not forcing everyone to smile and say cheese. No, rather the best photos are those that show the connection between you all, where kids are being themselves. Lets them play tag, bring some props that looks nice but help keep the kids having fun (bubbles are a great one!)

Trust Your Photographer
Your photographer is there to guide you and bring your vision to life. Trust their expertise when it comes to poses, angles, and lighting. Relax, enjoy the experience, and let them capture the magic of your family. When you to control every single aspect of your session, you will be disappointed. You will be stressed. Everyone will be stressed, and that really does come across on camera.
Sure it is okay to have a vision and ideas for your session. Remember communication is key. And your professional photographer should be able to help with clothing ideas, locations that best fit your family, lighting, etc.
Planning the perfect family portrait session doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right photographer, location, and a little preparation, you can create a fun and meaningful experience that results in stunning images to treasure forever. Remember, the magic lies in capturing your family’s love, laughter, and connection—so embrace the moment and let your personalities shine through.
